Dembot: Misdirected Social Victims of the Antiquated Web

Thanks for Tweeting this on TWITTER Dave. What do you assess the content value of Twitterville to be? I'm sad Pownce is gone, since you could share files on it, like jpegs and mp3s. I hate Facebook. Blogger is better than WordPress. Anybody still blogging on del.icio.us? LOL

There is a natural assumption that only the sites we see and use still exist; you never know who might be constructing interesting communities on other sites that you have abandoned. Don't be a social bigot, Andrew - I spoke about this at Ignite: http://bit.ly/socialbigot

Im not talking about social bigotry. I'm talking about being antiquated. The fact of the matter is that Myspace is not a well built network, its designed to make money for the site, not for the people, and in terms of interface, its literally poor.

The site is antiquated and people might be happy there, but Im suggesting these same people would likely be happier somewhere else, in a place that is better designed.

Another good example is Alta Vista. If someone came to me and said they were really excited about search engines and that they just discovered Alta Vista (c) 1997, with the exception of a rare anthropological experiment or the like, I'd suggest they consider some other options.

I feel the same way when someone emails me with a Yahoo email address. I feel bad, I really do...but still.

Or hotmail and msn for that matter

I got an email from msm.com the other day and I just assumed that person worked at Microsoft.

Myspace is a great place to profile musicians and their music. It features a great music player. Better than I've seen anywhere.

Some folks might think RocketBoom is antiquated! Like who listens to it anymore? And why isn't antiquated a form of social bigotry? Give us a list -- QUICK! What are the differences? Perhaps point of view is significant? Some of my best friends are on AOL, right!

As noted above, AltaVisa is antiquated. Windows 95 is. The puck mouse from Apple. What if you had a headache and your doctor thought the best medical solution was still a lobotomy?

This is a conversation ultimately about "branding". If you were a student studying brands in college you might ask: Why is Apple considered to be a "cool" brand and why is Microsoft considered to be a "stogy" brand? Or maybe they are not. It's all just a general perception. From my first sentence of this piece: "here are some thoughts to file under the Psychology of brand association."
